Here is a list of mistakes that people make and how to avoid them:
- Choosing the Cheapest Mover - The least expensive moving company might not be the worst choice, but too often, people accept the price without really asking what might be missing. Often, as with everything in life, the cheapest is rarely the best deal. It’s worth looking at, but don’t assume that the lowest price is the best value.
- Not giving the movers a complete inventory of your home - If you don’t tell them everything that you need to have moved, they can’t give you a true estimate of the price. If, when they arrive, there’s a grand piano and three extra rooms, the price will be very different. Be certain that you give a 100% accurate inventory of your belongings. Don’t forget the stuff in the basement, garage, attic, crawl spaces, and shed. All of that will need to be moved and you won’t want to have to figure it out on the day of. The movers need to make certain that they have the right size truck and all of the equipment to help you make your move well.
- Not getting estimates in writing - No professional mover should ever give you a verbal estimate. All of the estimates that you get should be in writing and include every detail of the move. If a mover says that a verbal offer is enough, you should simply move on to the next person.
- Not paying any deposit - A deposit commits you and the mover to the move. You shouldn’t ever pay a large deposit or the whole cost in full ahead of time. At the same time, not paying any of deposit might let the mover book another, more lucrative contract. A small deposit shows your commitment to getting the work done and their commitment to do it.
- Not asking about additional charges - While a truly well-done quote will include every possible contingency, you need to know everything that you might be charged for. If your delivery is delayed due to weather, if there are more steps into or out of the homes, or if there is a long traffic delay, you need to know what things might cost you.
Be careful, choose wisely, and get it in writing, every time.
